In the Chicano movement of the early 1970s, I met José Treviño through a mutual friend and poet Cecilio García-Camarillo. I had been doing projects documenting artwork by Chicanos and organizing exhibits of their work (and mine) here and there. Cecilio knew José.
The effect of his work on me was immediate; this was an artist with natural talent. To me, this is most apparent in the ability to draw, the bottom line for us figurative painters, and José had it. We have been friends since, and I’ve had the privilege of seeing his work evolve. It was with great pleasure that I enjoyed his retrospective.
I was pleasantly surprised by that wealth of early work that I had never seen before. The more familiar pieces, the ones that had been a staple in many of the exhibitions in which we participated, were like old friends.
¡Mas, José, más! |
