José Treviño has been a source of inspiration to me since I met him in 1973.  When I met him he was part of a Chicano art exhibit held in downtown Austin.  In those days it was quite unusual to see Chicano art displayed anywhere in the city.  Among the exhibitors were César Martínez, Santa Barraza and Amado Peña.
José has captured the mystical side of our Chicano world.  From his colorful paintings to his masterful woodcuts, José interprets a unique world around him.  His use of color and texture unite to create an intriguing visual quality in his work.
José’s art has always intrigued me and continues to do so to this day.  It draws from the indigenous roots of our culture, which speak to me without the use of words.  He relies on the spirit of his work to convey a message.  The message I hear is his love for our art and our culture.
